Who produces the most new energy vehicles in the world?

On November 24, 2023, BYD’s 6 millionth new energy vehicle rolled off the production line at its Zhengzhou factory, solidifying its position as the world’s first enterprise to achieve this milestone of producing 6 million new energy vehicles.

BYD reported that it took only over three months from the “5 millionth” to the “6 millionth” vehicle, marking a rapid pace in setting new production and sales records. This not only signifies another milestone for BYD but also mirrors the development of China’s new energy vehicle industry, further propelling it into a phase of high-quality, large-scale, and globalized development.

The event on November 24 saw representatives from BYD’s employees collectively celebrating the production of the 6 millionth new energy vehicle, the BYD Tang 5 under the ‘Tang’ brand. Highlighting their innovation in research and development, BYD boasts of having 11 major research institutes, accumulating over 40,000 patent applications globally, with over 28,000 authorized patents. They’ve introduced disruptive technologies like Blade Battery, DM-i Super Hybrid, e Platform 3.0, CTB Battery Chassis Integration, E-SEED, Cloud Car, and the DMO Super Hybrid Off-road Platform. BYD representatives stated that this production achievement reinforces BYD’s position as a global leader in new energy vehicles.

According to the latest statistics, in October, BYD’s sales of new energy vehicles surpassed 300,000 units for the first time, setting a new monthly sales record. Simultaneously, the multi-brand strategy encompassing BYD’s brands like Dynasty/Ocean, Tang, Yuanwang, and Fangcheng Bao has fully launched. The Tang 5 officially hit the market and commenced deliveries, while the Yuanwang U8 began deliveries. With this multi-brand strategy, BYD aims to leverage leading-edge technology and diversified products to create more value in the market, meeting the needs of different consumers.

Regarding the global market, BYD actively expands its presence by employing a strategy combining exports and local production to accelerate the expansion of its new energy passenger cars worldwide. BYD’s new energy passenger cars have entered 58 countries and regions, accumulating overseas sales exceeding 200,000 units. They have consecutively secured the champion position in the new energy vehicle market in Thailand, Brazil, and other locations.

Furthermore, BYD garnered attention at this year’s Munich Motor Show and Tokyo Mobility Show, where models like Han, Ocean, Yuan PLUS, and Dolphin gained increasing recognition from international consumers. BYD, along with many other domestic brands, is stepping into the global spotlight, driving the global automotive industry into the era of new energy.

At the ongoing 2023 Guangzhou Auto Show, BYD unveiled its high-end brand, Yuanwang’s supercar platform, and the E-SEED concept car. The Yuanwang U8 luxury edition, Yuanwang U9, and the E-SEED concept car also made their debut on the show’s main stage.

BYD’s R&D personnel introduced the E-SEED concept car, highlighting its revolutionary technology platform. The car doesn’t feature traditional steering or braking mechanisms but achieves braking and steering through a combined driving, braking, and steering technology, independent of traditional mechanical structures, thereby achieving comprehensive vehicle-level safety redundancy.

Yang Dongsheng, Vice President of BYD and Director of the Automotive New Technology Research Institute, expressed that the E-SEED’s disruptive technology platform enables four-motor independent drive, pioneering four major vehicle-level redundant capabilities: drive redundancy, power redundancy, braking redundancy, and steering redundancy. He emphasized that through continuous innovation and iteration of the E-SEED technology, they aim to continually expand the vehicle’s safety boundaries, pushing automotive safety to new heights.

Yang views the E-SEED’s safety redundancy technology as opening a new direction in the integration control of chassis and power technology within the industry, representing another milestone in automotive safety. Currently, braking and steering redundancy have not yet been applied in mass-produced models. In the future, Yuanwang will continue to optimize this technology to achieve both performance and experiential superiority when functional production is implemented.

In the past week (from November 13th to November 19th), domestic new energy vehicle sales totaled 183,000 units, surpassing a 40% penetration rate. Among these, BYD achieved another sales peak, reaching 54,100 units. Apart from BYD, the top five brands were Tesla, Wuling, Li Auto, and Aiways.

BYD’s latest production and sales data indicate that in October, its sales of new energy vehicles reached approximately 301,800 units. From January to October 2023, BYD’s cumulative sales of new energy vehicles reached around 2.3815 million units, marking a 70.36% year-on-year increase. According to their plans, BYD aims for an annual sales target of 3 million units in 2023. This achievement represents 79.38% of their annual sales target, nearing completion at nearly eighty percent.
